The quick answer

The best GeoGuessr alternative is World Explorer's 3D Location Guesser: €1 once instead of €47.88+ a year, no Street View, and you fly through real 3D terrain to work out where on Earth you are. For free multiplayer, pick WorldGuessr; for free solo Street View-style play, OpenGuessr or GeoHub.

Key takeaways

  • GeoGuessr isn't cheap: Pro is €6.99 a month, or €3.99 a month billed yearly (€47.88). That's 48× the price of World Explorer's €1 unlock.
  • World Explorer is the only 3D one: real elevation data and satellite imagery you fly through, so you guess from landforms, not road signs.
  • Free options exist (WorldGuessr, OpenGuessr, GeoHub, Geotastic) and they're worth knowing about, mostly for multiplayer.
  • 10 rounds, up to 50,000 points: World Explorer scores up to 5,000 per round, and a 150 km miss still earns about 4,500.

1. World Explorer: the 3D alternative that costs €1

Our pickBest value
  • Price€1 one-time
  • Imagery3D terrain + satellite
  • Rounds10 per game
  • Max score50,000

Every other game in this list drops you into a photo. World Explorer drops you into a landscape. The 3D Location Guesser takes real elevation data and satellite imagery of the whole planet and lets you fly through it, so you read the clues that are actually there: the shape of the coastline, the direction a river drains, how arid the slopes are, how the land is farmed.

Made for phones: gestures, drone sticks and a landscape mode

World Explorer switches to a touch interface automatically on phones and tablets, and it has two ways to fly, so you can pick the one that feels natural. You change modes with the button in the top-left stack, and your choice carries into landscape.

Gesture mode (the default)

Think Google Earth: one finger pans the map, pinch zooms (altitude), a two-finger vertical swipe tilts the camera and a two-finger twist rotates the view. Movement keeps a little momentum when you let go, a double-tap glides you to the spot you tapped, and the North button snaps back to a top-down, north-up view.

Drone sticks

Tap Sticks and two virtual joysticks appear: the left stick moves you forward and sideways, the right stick looks around (turn and tilt), and the up and down arrow buttons climb and descend, like an RC drone controller. The stick speed is proportional to how far you push.

Landscape: the immersive view

Rotate your phone and the interface steps aside: the buttons hide for a clean full-screen view of the terrain, while the controls you picked stay live. Rotate back to portrait to change mode or reach the menu. It's the best way to take in a mountain range.

GeoGuessr: the baseline everyone compares against

The originalSubscriptionBiggest community
  • PriceFree daily challenge; Pro €6.99/mo, or €3.99/mo billed yearly (€47.88)
  • PlatformsWeb, Steam, iOS, Android
  • ImageryStreet-level
  • Reach"100 million players"; 4.5/5 in the App Store

GeoGuessr is the game that defined the genre, and it still sets the bar for community and polish. Pro adds unlimited play, an ad-free experience, private parties, a creator mode for custom maps and quizzes, and community play, and the Steam version comes at no extra cost. Around the game there is a whole ecosystem: a World Championship, organizations, merch and gift cards all sit in the top navigation.

The homepage asks you to sign up to play, with Google, Apple, Facebook or email, and the free tier is built around the daily challenge. The catch is the recurring bill: even the cheapest yearly plan is €47.88 a year, and the monthly plan works out to €83.88. If you play every day and love the community, that can be worth it. If you play a few rounds now and then, it usually isn't.

Pros

  • Huge community, competitions and creator tools
  • Apps for iOS and Android plus Steam
  • Polished, with private parties

Cons

  • Unlimited play needs a subscription
  • Account sign-up before you play
  • Street-level photos only

Where World Explorer differs: there's no subscription and no account to explore, it's €1 once, and you fly over 3D terrain instead of standing inside a photo.

2. WorldGuessr: the best free multiplayer pick

Free duelsOpen sourceParty mode
  • PriceFree
  • ModesSingleplayer, ranked duel, unranked, 2v2, parties, daily
  • ImageryStreet View-style
  • CodeOpen source on GitHub

WorldGuessr calls itself a "free GeoGuessr alternative with unlimited rounds and fun multiplayer modes", and its code lives in an open-source GitHub repository. If your priority is competing live against other people at no cost, this is the one to try first.

On your first visit it greets you with a short tutorial that lets you pick Country Guesser (labelled "best for beginners", where you just choose the right country) or Classic (where you try to guess the exact location), then drops you into a real-world street scene. The top bar offers Join Party and Login, so you can jump into a friend's game quickly.

Pros

  • Free, with ranked duels and 2v2
  • Open source and community-driven
  • Beginner-friendly Country Guesser mode

Cons

  • Same Street View-style gameplay as the original
  • Best with other people online

Where World Explorer differs: it's a solo, terrain-reading game you can play any time without needing opponents online.

3. OpenGuessr: free and unlimited

Free & unlimitedTutorial includedMultiplayer
  • PriceFree
  • PlaytimeUnlimited
  • MultiplayerYes
  • ImageryStreet View-style

OpenGuessr describes itself as a free GeoGuessr alternative "with unlimited playtime and multiplayer". When you open it you're greeted with a quick tutorial offer ("Fancy a quick introduction to OpenGuessr?") that you can skip straight to the menu, then it drops you into the familiar guess-the-location loop.

That makes it the easiest switch if you just want the original format for free. We couldn't include a screenshot here: the site currently sits behind a Cloudflare verification step for automated browsers, so see it on openguessr.com.

Pros

  • Free, with unlimited playtime
  • Multiplayer included
  • Short tutorial for newcomers

Cons

  • Familiar format, so nothing new if you already know GeoGuessr

Where World Explorer differs: it's a different format entirely: 3D terrain you fly through, with a rounds-and-score system built around landforms.

4. GeoHub: the gym for practising regions

Region gymDaily tipsFree
  • PriceFree
  • MapsWorld, Famous Landmarks, Canada, United States, Urban World
  • ExtrasCountry Streaks, Daily Challenge, Find Maps
  • CommunityGitHub and Discord

GeoHub is a free geography guessing game with a wide menu. The home screen leads with a "Today's Tip" (for example, that South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana and Eswatini all drive on the left), tagged by difficulty, region and topic, so you learn something every visit.

The sidebar is where it shines: ready-made maps like World, Famous Landmarks, Canada, the United States and Urban World, plus Country Streaks, a Daily Challenge, and tools to find or manage community maps. It's a good training ground if you want to get better at spotting regions rather than just play casually.

Pros

  • Free, with lots of themed maps
  • Tips and daily challenge keep you learning
  • Open community links (GitHub, Discord)

Cons

  • Account for saved maps and progress
  • Street View-style imagery like the others

Where World Explorer differs: you learn the planet by flying across it in 3D, so mountains, coastlines and rivers become the clues.

5. Geotastic: free live play with friends

Geotastic is a "free to play multiplayer focused geo quiz app that can be played with friends simultaneously", funded by its community. Its homepage shows a monthly-coverage bar and a running list of the day's donations, which makes it clear who is paying for the servers.

Its privacy policy states that using the site requires registering a free user account and that the game relies heavily on Google Maps. Choose it when the point is playing together in real time and you don't mind creating an account.

Pros

  • Free to play, community-funded
  • Built for live multiplayer
  • Custom and community games

Cons

  • Ad-supported, with requests to disable ad blockers

Where World Explorer differs: exploring the 3D map needs no account, and you can sit down and play a round on your own in seconds.

6. City Guesser: urban rounds with a multiplayer lobby

Urban explorerMonuments modeMultiplayer lobby
  • PriceFree (donation supported)
  • ModesWorldwide, USA, Europe, Monuments
  • ExtrasStreaks, Multiplayer
  • Best forQuick city rounds

City Guesser "plops you into a random city" and asks you to work out where you are. The welcome screen is refreshingly direct: pick a region and press Guess. The cards tell you what to look for ("be sure to look at street signs and cars") and promise a perfect score if you "watch out for flags" in the Europe round.

Beyond Worldwide, USA and Europe there is a Monuments mode ("is your monument trivia up to par?"), a Streaks leaderboard and a Multiplayer button in the top bar. A banner asks players to help keep it free, so it's clearly a small, community-supported project, and that's part of its charm.

Pros

  • Free, with a clean and fast interface
  • Monuments and Europe modes add variety
  • Multiplayer and streaks

Cons

  • City-focused, so less variety of landscapes
  • Depends on donations to stay free

Where World Explorer differs: you aren't limited to cities: it covers mountains, deserts, coastlines and the in-between places no street photographer visits.

7. TimeGuessr: guess the place and the year

Time machineWhere + whenOn iOS & Android
  • FormatGuess where and when a photo was taken
  • ModesPlay, Daily, Community
  • AppsGoogle Play and App Store
  • LanguageMultiple, with a switcher

TimeGuessr tests "both your geography and history knowledge": it shows a historic photograph and you place it on the map and pick the year. A 1950s tram street scene and a Mexico City protest might be next to each other, which is exactly the point.

The menu has three clear doors: Play (a random game), Daily (one challenge for everyone) and Community (games made by other players). It also ships native apps for Android and iOS, with a language switcher in the top bar, so it's an easy one to play on the commute.

TimeGuessr homepage with Play, Daily and Community options

Pros

  • Unique twist: place and year
  • Daily challenge and community games
  • Native mobile apps

Cons

  • Photo-based, so it rewards history knowledge more than geography
  • Solo-leaning

Where World Explorer differs: it keeps the question strictly about the planet (where), asking you to read terrain, climate and coastlines rather than history.

8. Worldle and Globle: the daily puzzles

Coffee-break puzzle6 guessesHot or cold
  • WorldleGuess the country from its shape, 6 tries
  • GlobleOne mystery country a day; hotter colour = closer
  • PriceFree; Worldle sells an ad-free Passport
  • TimeA couple of minutes a day

Worldle shows the silhouette of a country (or territory) and gives you six guesses, with clues after every attempt. It has grown into a small suite: practice mode, flashcards, an archive of past puzzles, a challenge mode, leagues and a streak calendar, with a paid Passport that removes the ads.

Globle flips the idea around: every day there is a new Mystery Country, and each incorrect guess appears on a 3D globe in a colour showing how close it is. The hotter the colour, the closer you are. It's a lovely, quiet game that teaches you which countries sit next to which.

Pros

  • Fast daily habit, great for streaks
  • Teaches country shapes and neighbours
  • Free to play

Cons

  • Not a replacement for a location guesser
  • One puzzle a day, then wait

Where World Explorer differs: it's a full 10-round exploration game rather than a once-a-day puzzle, so you can play as long as you like.

9. Seterra: learn the map before you guess it

  • Quizzes400+ map quizzes
  • CoverageU.S., Europe, the Americas, Africa, Asia, Oceania, World

Seterra is the quiz site teachers have used for years: more than 400 map quizzes covering countries, capitals, rivers, flags, states and provinces, grouped by region from The U.S. and Europe to Africa, Asia and Oceania. The homepage invites you to "master geography with +400 map quizzes" and the Play Now button is marked free.

It also has printables for educators, and the logo notes that it is "by GeoGuessr", so it sits in the same family as the original game. Use it to learn the facts (what is the capital of Peru, which river runs through Cairo) that make you better at any guessing game, including this one.

Pros

  • Huge range of free map quizzes
  • Printables for teachers
  • Apps for iOS and Android

Cons

  • Quizzes, not location guessing
  • Flat maps rather than immersive views

Where World Explorer differs: the learning happens in context: you fly over a place, then pin it, so the geography sticks.

How to choose the right GeoGuessr alternative

If you're not sure, the cheapest experiment is World Explorer: it's a euro, and the 3D map is free to explore first.

How World Explorer's scoring works

Each game is 10 rounds. Every round is worth up to 5,000 points, which fall off smoothly with the distance between your pin and the real location, so a perfect game is 50,000. Here's what a miss is worth:

Your guess was…Points (of 5,000)
Spot on (0 km)5,000
50 km away≈ 4,840
150 km away≈ 4,520
500 km away≈ 3,580
1,500 km away≈ 1,840
5,000 km away≈ 180
